Hi, there! My name is Dorien Scheets and I am beyond ecstatic to be the acting Director of Community Engagement of SHC for the 2018-2019 school year. I’m currently a sophomore here at Ball State University and loving every minute of it! I have double majors in Sociocultural Anthropology and Public History (yeah, I picked those two because they sound super impressive), with a minor in Spanish. I’m from Monticello, Indiana, but I also call Avon, Indiana my home.
My favorite part of being a student at BSU is the sense of community and dedication to acceptance that the campus seems to have. I love that everyone can find their niche! I found my own niche right here in the Honors College. I’m so thankful to be so involved in the Honors community, from having the opportunity to take incredible Honors courses, participating in SHC, to conducting research through fellowships, attending and presenting at major academic conferences and more, the Ball State University Honors College has truly been a second home and has given me countless priceless experiences.
I am honored to be involved in a multitude of on-campus organizations and projects. Just to name a few, I’m currently involved with EIL (Excellence in Leadership) acting as an Ambassador and Phase 2 student, Global Brigades, and our very own SHC. Additionally, I’m an Undergraduate Honors Fellow and will be working this year with Dr. Obed Frausto doing research about the indigenous experience in Mexico, and their tradition of resistance against oppression from the Mexican government. In my free time (though it’s hard to come by), I enjoy taking naps, drinking coffee, and exploring antique malls, boutiques, and patisseries!
If you ever want to reach out with questions, comments, or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me! I’m looking forward to growing and learning with you all; cheers to a great year!
